A Guide to Traditional Printing Styles at Gee Brothers

Discover the Art Behind Our Printing Processes

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be exploring the classic printing styles that define Gee Brothers, each one with its own story.
We’re beginning with a brief overview of the techniques we use, many of which have been passed down through generations.

From letterpress to foiling, each process tells a story of craftsmanship.

Our Processes – A Tradition of Fine Printing

At Gee Brothers, every piece of stationery is crafted with the utmost care, using time-honoured techniques and the finest materials. From classic invitations to elegant correspondence cards, we offer a range of exquisite print processes to suit every taste and occasion.

Here’s how each process works!

Flat Printing

A versatile and contemporary method, flat printing uses lithographic technology to lay ink cleanly onto the paper surface without texture. It allows for fine detail, colour variation, and a smooth, modern finish - ideal for minimalist or graphic-led designs.

Letterpress

Letterpress involves inking a raised copper die and pressing it firmly into the paper using a traditional press. The result gives a beautiful debossed impression that you can both see and feel. Loved for its tactile quality and old-world charm, letterpress is perfect for classic or romantic designs, with each impression a mark of timeless elegance.

Thermography

Thermography creates a raised, slightly glossy finish by sprinkling resin powder onto freshly printed ink, which is then heated until it melts and hardens. This produces a result reminiscent of engraving at a more accessible price point.

Engraving

The most traditional and prestigious method, engraving, begins with a hand-etched copper plate. Ink is applied to the plate and wiped clean from the surface, leaving it in the engraved lines. Paper is then pressed onto the plate from above, forcing the ink onto the page and creating a raised image with an indentation on the back - a true hallmark of heritage. The result is exceptionally crisp and elegant - favoured for formal invitations and high-end stationery.

Foiling

Foil stamping uses heat and pressure to apply metallic or pigmented foil to the surface of the paper. A metal die is created with your design, then pressed into the paper along with a foil layer to produce a shiny, reflective finish. Popular in gold, silver, and rose gold.

Blind Embossing

Blind embossing is achieved by pressing a metal die into the paper without any ink or foil, raising the design to create subtle dimension. With nothing but light and shadow to define it, this process results in an understated, sophisticated effect.
